I recently had a lovely visit to Maggie’s Centre in Middlesbrough. It’s now open and already proving to be a great addition to the area. The centre sits on the grounds of The James Cook University Hospital on Marton Road in TS4 3BW and welcomes visitors Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. You can turn up whenever you need to, with no appointment or referral required.
I had a chat and a coffee with Michelle Holmes, the Centre Head, and it was clear how much care has gone into creating a calm and friendly space for anyone affected by cancer. Maggie’s Middlesbrough offers free support from trained professionals, including one to one emotional and practical help, relaxation and stress management sessions, benefits advice, support groups and a range of courses. There is also a warm kitchen space where the kettle is always on, helping the centre feel more like a home than a clinical setting.
Maggie’s has been offering this kind of support across the UK for nearly 30 years, and it is wonderful to finally have a centre here in Teesside. If you or someone you know is living with cancer or supporting someone through it, it is well worth popping in for a cuppa and a chat.
